  • Swamp Bay: The carpark is 4 minutes drive towards town.  It’s about a 40 minute walk.

  • Mt Rooper Loop: About 1.5 hours and uses the same carpark as Swamp Bay.

  • Walk the neighbourhood: It’s lovely just to do a circuit of the friendly neighbourbood.

  • Walk down to the Harbour: Have a cuppa and meander on the jetty. Enjoy the action of the boats and fisherman.

  • Enjoy a fun ebike tour with ‘Bike and Hike’ which leaves from Shute Harbour to ebike on nearby South Molle Island.

  • Keep an eye out from your balcony for turtles and whales (humpbacks give birth right here June-Sep).

Seasonal wonders

  • Whale watching: June to September is the prime time for humpback whale watching in Shute Harbour. You can witness the incredible sight of these majestic whales as they migrate through the region, with some choosing the area around Shute Harbour to give birth, you can see then right outside your window!.

  • Tuna: Oct-Feb  Shute Harbour becomes a hotspot for tuna. This is a unique opportunity for fishing enthusiasts or those interested in observing these fast and powerful marine creatures in their natural habitat. Along with stingrays, you may hear the splooshing sound of them feeding and likely see them leaping from the water.

  • Coral spawning: The Great Barrier Reef experiences coral spawning between October and November. This natural phenomenon is a breathtaking event where corals release their eggs and sperm into the water, resulting in vibrant and colorful displays.

  • Migratory birds: Shute Harbour is home to a variety of migratory birds. During certain times of the year, you may witness the arrival or departure of these birds as they travel great distances. Keep an eye out for species like the Eastern Koel, the Pheasant Coucal (they sound a bit like a monkey) and the speedy Torresian Pied Imperial Pigeons.

  • Marine life diversity: The waters around Shute Harbour boast diverse marine life. You  may see various species of fish, rays, and sea turtles from the balcony. At night you can often hear stingrays jumping right out of the water with a big sploosh.  Snorkeling or taking a boat tour can offer a closer look at the rich underwater ecosystems.

  • National parks: Shute Harbour provides access to the Whitsunday Islands National Park. The park is known for its lush rainforests, pristine beaches, and unique flora and fauna. You can explore hiking trails and enjoy the natural beauty of the islands.

  • Manta ray migration: From November to February, there is a chance to witness the migration of manta rays. These graceful creatures visit the area, providing an incredible opportunity for snorkelers and divers to observe them in their natural habitat.

  • Sea turtles nesting: Sea turtles, including the endangered loggerhead and green turtles, nest in the Whitsunday region. The nesting season typically occurs from November to March. Responsible tourism practices are encouraged to protect these nesting sites.

  • Dolphins: Dolphins are frequently spotted in the waters around Shute Harbour. Watch them from the balcony or whilst out on boat tours and cruises you may have the opportunity to witness these playful creatures riding the bow wave.
